The school garden was initiated in spring
of 2005 and is maintained by students in Garden Club from April to October. The
garden is a living outdoor lab for students to learn where food comes from and how
to grow and nurture plants from seed to harvest using organic methods. Our garden
is theme-based, with different beds representing foods that are native to different
continents. We also have a wide variety of plants that are native to Maryland, in
addition to a butterfly garden and a sense-sational garden to please your 5 senses.
The HHA garden has won many mini-grants and awards since 2005, from the Maryland
Agricultural Education Foundation (

) and the National Gardening Association (

).
HHA participates in The Growing Connection (
http://www.thegrowingconnection.org/ ),

a global network of kids growing food
in water-efficient Earth Boxes. The Growing Connection is a grassroots project developed
by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (
http://www.fao.org/ ) and the American Horticultural Society (
http://www.ahs.org/ ) supported by a progressive coalition of
private and public sector partners.
